A woman drops her teacup upon learning what creatures inhabit her drinking water. The text along the top margin reads "Microcosm. Dedicated to the London Water Companies 1 - Brought forth all monstrous, all prodigious things, 2 - Hydras and gordons, and chimeras dire. Vide Milton." Sanitation was a major problem in Victorian London, which saw two major cholera outbreaks before the construction of Joseph Bazalgette's innovative sewage system in the 1860's.
